Welcome to Ayur Kerala Vaidyashala

Vaatas work in Unison

The 5 major and the other minor Vaatas work in unison. In the sense, one of them when disturbed or vitiated, disturbs the other Vaatas; and hence the other doshas get disturbed. So, it's our responsibility to keep the Vaatas in harmony.

What is Vaata exactly?

  • Vaayu + Aakasha (Air + Ether/Space) = Vaata. A unique combination of the 2 elements of Nature makes Vaata.
  • Vaata = Prabhu (Vaata is regarded as the “Life-Force, God, Divine, Shakti”)
  • Vaata has these ‘guNas’ (qualities)
    – Laghu (Lightness)
    – Ruksha (Dryness)
    – Sheeta (Coldness)
    – Khara (Roughness)
    – Sukshma (Subtle, Minuteness)
    – Chala (Movement)
  • All these guNas have to be meditated upon and understood well. If we indulge in too much of exposure to cold air or cold water / food consumption, then the other Gunas tend to get imbalanced; and the person experiences drying of skin, hair, nails, throat, etc. And the person tends to have increased movement with respect to body limbs or with the frequency of thought-movement.
  • Pitta and Kapha are other 2 Doshas which are lame and dependent on Vaata for their functioning. If there is a buildup of either of pitta or kapha doshas in the body, we should understand it is because of some disturbance in the Vaata dosha.
  • There are 5 + 5 types of Vaata dosha, which are described in the video in fair detail
